I recently completed this commissioned piece - a custom hand lettered illustration of the saying "a ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for". This print can be found in the shop now as well!
Like any other project, I begin first with some quick, rough sketches that help me visualize possible layouts and different typographic treatments.
From there I made a large scale sketch and refined it until I felt it was ready for inking. I also sketched out the illustrative elements and inked them separately from the lettering.
I digitized the piece, cleaned up the vector work and played with color and texture until I found what I was looking for.
My client sent me this photo of the final print in the frame and ready to give on Christmas day.
